The Discipline of Pharmaceutics

  • Pharmaceutics is the study of the quantitative aspects of drug delivery, and involves the design, development, and evaluation of drugs in combination with an appropriate dosage form.  A pharmaceutical scientist:
    • characterizes physical properties of drugs
    • develops innovative delivery systems for drugs
    • Quantitatively evaluates drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and pharmacological activity in the living organism.
  • Pharmaceutics will play a key role due to understanding of dosage form design and evaluation and integral relationship between pharmacokinetics and clinical success.

  • Pharmaceutics deals with all facets of the process of turning a new chemical entity (NCE) into a medication that can be used safely and effectively by patients in the community.

  • The body’s own physiological signals may be used to direct the delivery of drug only as required for therapy The patient should be provided the maximum opportunity for successful treatment with the chosen drug. Here pharmaceutics is a unique science which can lead in the rational selection and use of drug delivery systems.

  • We can expect that drug delivery systems will become more sophisticated and the impact of pharmaceutics wide spread. One of our strength lies in the interdisciplinary approach that we foster in education and research

  • Every student must take a common core of courses and attend classes and practicals. This approach together with informal discussions assures that the graduate will have a full appreciation for both physical and the biological aspects of pharmaceutics. This is extremely important to ones future career since the interplay between these areas is inseparable in pharmaceutics.

  • Because bridging gap between biological and physico-chemical considerations in the design, use and evaluation of new drug delivery systems will rapidly become a high technology problem as the nature of drugs change, this division is well positioned to face the future.

  • After obtaining better infrastructural facilities, the Dept. Can take up more Industry sponsored projects, and collaborate more effectively to initiate and sustain contemporary and applicative research areas. This will be very pertinent in view of post-GATT scenario, when Pharma Industry would need to have such collaborations and Interactions for sharing the manpower and the Intellectual Property Rights with academic institutions
