Overview

The subject of pharmaceutical chemistry plays a major role in shaping a student into a true pharmacy professional. Though the profession has undergone tremendous changes and has registered great advancements in various branches of it, the importance of pharmaceutical chemistry in the curriculum of a pharmacy programme cannot be overemphasised. Every branch becomes invigorated when a new bioactive molecule is discovered. The diversity offered by the subject is amazing.

An insight into the design of novel agents, molecular modifications designed to target drugs to specific tissues and molecular biology studies to study the interaction of ligands and receptors are given by the department. Applications of NMR, HPLC and UV Spectroscopy to investigate molecular recognition at receptors, isolation of a bioactive compound from a natural product, and preparation of bulk drugs are also covered by department. These areas of pharmaceutical chemistry are extremely interesting and rewarding.
